“Singing seems to make people happy,” says Liz Fleischer. After 35 years teaching her acclaimed Sight-Singing classes at Kaufman Center's Lucy Moses School, she’s in a position to know. Recognized as “a sight-singing teacher who gets results” in The New York Times and “one of New York’s great teachers” in New York Magazine, Fleischer has developed a uniquely effective approach that uses singing as the medium for teaching basic theory and musicianship.

Fleischer first began teaching Sight-Singing when she found that the students in the keyboard improvisation classes she was teaching at the time represented such a wide range of skill levels and weaknesses that it was difficult to group them in classes where they all could learn. Sight-Singing allowed her to use singing as the medium for musicianship, starting everyone at the beginning with basic skills that were fun and active. “The second I started teaching everyone how to sight sing," she says, "everything became fun.”

Fleischer believes that the standard music curriculum, which most often combines Sight-Singing and ear training with theory, doesn't necessarily produce the strong reading skills needed by singers. While a strong theory background is important, she's found that using singing as the basis for teaching produces excellent results. "By separating out Sight-Singing from the mix, it has been possible for me to provide a much more single-minded, pragmatic approach strongly allied with performing," she says. "Like learning to play a team sport well, the system relies on skills in context along with strategy and judgment." And most importantly, people love to sing.

"People often mistakenly believe they have too little talent to acquire these skills. I’m in the enviable position of letting them know that they can."

Fleischer grew up in a house filled with music. Her jazz pianist father, who played with the likes of Django Reinhardt, made sure she knew her way around the keyboard, and on long road trips the family sang Bach inventions or countermelodies to jazz standards. Fleischer credits this early training with giving her some of the most important tools in teaching and arranging. "I learned the musical language the way bilingual children do, with little need for grammar or theoretical understanding. Years later, when I began to think seriously about teaching Sight-Singing, it was this 'native speakers' model I turned to again and again for direction."

Understanding that her family considered music a hobby rather than a livelihood, Fleischer initially resisted choosing it as a career. “I didn’t know I was going into music – I fought it,” she remembers. She attended Juilliard Prep as a child and had studied at the New England Conservatory for two years when she realized that she didn’t want to be a pianist. “I didn’t belong in a conservatory,” she explains. “I couldn’t stand being in a practice room all day by myself. It's ensemble playing that had always drawn me to music.” After earning a degree in psychology and music from Columbia and a master's in music teaching "just in case," Fleischer worked as a keyboard player with dance and theater troupes and began teaching keyboard improvisation at the Hebrew Arts School—which later became Lucy Moses School—for Kaufman Center founding director Tzipora Jochsberger. “Tzipora was a master teacher herself and knew how to structure a school so that transformative things could happen in the classroom, and I got hooked,” she explains.

Sight reading opens doors for both professional singers wading through vast quantities of repertoire with little preparation time and amateurs auditioning for a choral society, explains Fleischer. "Strong sight reading skills give singers real independence, enabling them to choose their own repertoire, learn at their own pace and face reading auditions and first rehearsals with a level of confidence." Originally designed for avocational singers, the course quickly attracted professionals from Broadway along with theater and opera people, and instrumentalists working on their musicianship skills. Fleischer occasionally sees her students on posters outside Carnegie Hall but emphasizes that many are amateurs, and the classes are for everyone.

"I have always believed it is a terrible shame to turn music into a spectator sport," says Fleischer, "particularly when you consider the innate aptitude of most people and the intellectual, psychological and social benefits of active playing and singing." “People often mistakenly believe they have too little talent to acquire these skills,” she explains. "I’m in the enviable position of letting them know that they can, and that this training will give them new options and possibilities." In fact, most of Liz's students go on to do something fun with their skills.

Unlike learning an instrument, which takes many years of regular practice, reading skills can be acquired fairly quickly. Fleischer is supremely goal-oriented, a quality she feels is an asset in this kind of teaching. "I want to get people trained and out in the field using these new skills as quickly as possible," she explains. "With strong reading, even a relative beginner has a chance of singing with a first-rate chorus, reinforcing and building on these skills. For instrumental students, these performing opportunities may take much longer to prepare for, although chamber music is a terrific reward."

Acquiring new skills is always exhilarating, but you can't discount the pure comfort of music making. "Performing, teaching and studying music have sustained me through difficult times and brought me tremendous joy," says Fleischer when asked about her teaching philosophy. "If anything, I'm committed to sharing that joy with as many people as I possibly can. Is that a philosophy?"

For more information about the Scholarship Luncheon, call 212 501 3350.

Faye Menken Schneier
Kaufman Center is pleased to honor Faye Menken Schneier at this year’s Scholarship Luncheon. Over the years, she has been an outspoken advocate, a talented fundraiser and a loyal patron of Kaufman Center’s programs. She started as volunteer in the early 1980's after spending three years in the first Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, where she shared a dressing room with Bette Midler and Adrienne Barbeau—and sang a duet with Jan Peerce. After that run, in which she played both one of Tevye's daughters (Schprintze) and her own great grandmother (Grandma Tzeitel), Faye married Roger Schneier and gave birth to their daughter, Jennie Nell Menken Schneier Heck.

In Faye's long tenure at Kaufman Center, she has been Development Associate, Assistant Director of Development and Manager of Community Relations, but she has always insisted that her true role has been "Yenta of the Centa." Her responsibilities have included research; writing grant proposals, solicitation letters and speeches; recruiting for the Special Music School; selling seats to schools for shows; and writing song parodies for galas.

Involvement at Kaufman Center has been a family affair—ranging from daughter Jennie as Lucy Moses School student and Summer Musical Theater Workshop composer to brother Alan Menken as a 1993 Gala Honoree and subject of Merkin Hall concerts— to numerous friends and family members introduced to the Center, where they became members of the staff, faculty and/or student body.

When she's not nudging everyone at Kaufman Center, Faye and Roger spend time cooking for the guys at the Stephen Wise Shelter, going to theater, playing in their lake house upstate and visiting Jennie and her husband Andy in Niskayuna. After they take a long-awaited road trip this spring, proving that all roads lead to Omaha, Faye and Roger plan to harvest olives at their friends’ grove in Italy (overlooking the Bay of Naples) this coming fall. Faye started at the Center as a volunteer, so expect to keep seeing her around as a volunteer!

Last August Kaufman Center launched an exciting new program: the week-long Summer String Fest. A dedicated staff taught and performed with 20 enthusiastic students, most of whom ranged in ages from 9 to 17, who took part in individual lessons, sectionals, student and faculty performances and chamber ensemble rehearsals with conductor Richard Stout. Students took a field trip to Lincoln Center to hear Joshua Bell rehearsing at the Mostly Mozart Festival, participated in an alternative fiddle demonstration and jam session with Mark O'Connor, and enjoyed a unique art/music activity guided by Lance Paladino. At the end of the week, the students gave an inspiring performance at Merkin Hall. The program included Concerto Grosso No. 8 by Corelli; selections by Grieg, Prokofiev and Previn; and a traditional Klezmer rendition.

Praised by one parent as a real turning point and inspiration for her son, String Fest combines hard work with fun summer activities. The Festival encourages different age groups and skill levels to work together, creating a team spirit.

“For me the most exciting goal of String Fest is choosing great music that motivates and inspires students to work hard, giving them the satisfaction of excellence and preparing them for rewarding performances,” says Lynelle Smith, the Festival’s Artistic Coordinator. “The enthusiastic response from students, parents and faculty after our final concert last summer was an indicator that our goals were met!”

The 2010 Festival begins on August 9 and ends with a performance in Merkin Concert Hall on August 13. The registration deadline is March 15. To find out more, call 212 501 3360.

Merkin Concert Hall has always been a place to go to hear what’s new, from the astonishing young classical artists on the verge of fame in the Tuesday Matinees series to sneak peeks at brand new musicals in the annual Broadway Close Up concerts to world premieres of specially commissioned works by renowned composers. Concertgoers can check out what’s happening right now across a wide spectrum of 21st century music this winter and spring, when Merkin welcomes artists celebrated as “the Andy Warhol of Music” (Dutch composer JacobTV), “one of the next great hopes for the future of classical music” (New York Magazine on young composer Nico Muhly) and “the fiercest string quartet this side of hell” (ETHEL) among many others.

2010 began with world premieres of new film scores by New York Guitar Festival artists Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, David Bromberg, Marc Ribot, Alex de Grassi and others. Returning to Merkin for its tenth anniversary season, this year’s festival pairs the commissioned scores with classic silent films by Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harry Smith. The world premieres continue in February with the Bang on a Can All-Stars’ annual People’s Commissioning Fund Concert, which features the adventurous young composers Nik Bärtsch, Oscar Bettison, Christine Southworth and David Longstreth. In March the high-octane post-classical string quartet ETHEL teams up with the notorious Dutch “avant-pop” composer JacobTV for an evening of multi-media compositions—including two U.S. premieres—possessing an explosive strength and raw energy combined with extraordinarily intricate architectural design. Together with piano virtuoso Jeremy Denk, the boldly brilliant Lark Chamber Artists will perform the New York premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec’s Piano Quintet. The Brooklyn trio Elizabeth and the Catapult will explore the ways in which the traditional art song is being stretched and reshaped by rock, jazz and minimalism in an evening featuring the world premiere of a commissioned work. The season wraps up on May 27, when the eclectic and critically acclaimed young composer Nico Muhly shares the bill with one of the most prominent figures in European contemporary music: Sir Harrison Birtwistle. The SIGNAL ensemble will perform the world premiere of a new work by Muhly and the U.S. premiere of Birtwistle’s The Corridor. The evening begins with a special pre-concert performance of works by Muhly with Face the Music, Kaufman Center’s teen ensemble.
