A Sweeter Music

Thursday, March 12, 2009 8:00 pm

Sarah CahillHost John Schaefer continues the New Sounds® Live tradition of presenting music that reflects contemporary political realities. Pianist Sarah Cahill has commissioned a group of today’s leading composers to write a collection of pieces reacting to the war in Iraq. These composers, including Terry Riley, Frederic Rzewski, Kyle Gann, Jerome Kitzke, Phil Kline, Preben Antonsen and The Residents, have responded with a group of short, pungent piano works that form a vivid response to the ongoing Iraqi crisis.

Cahill drew the title, "A Sweeter Music," from Dr. Martin Luther King’s Nobel lecture: "We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody that is far superior to the discords of war."

Accompanying each of the piano pieces are arresting video visualizations on three screens by John Sanborn, including Civil War photographs and footage shot from a hot-air balloon above the Napa Valley.

Single tickets: $35 (members $20)
