Juxtapositions in Jazz

Saturday, April 04, 2009 8:00 pm

Jamie Baum and Steve Swallow Two jazz composer/performers offer their own takes on 20th century classics. Flutist Jamie Baum plays Ives' Suite, inspired by Charles Ives’ haunting music such as Fourth Symphony and The Unanswered Question. Known for the dark intensity of his tone, Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko ranges from fury to lyricism while displaying his trademark grit and verve.

Jamie Baum Septet: Jamie Baum, flute; Ralph Alessi, trumpet and flugelhorn; Doug Yates, alto sax and bass clarinet; Chris Komer, French horn; Luis Perdomo, piano; Jeff Hirshfield, drums; Johannes Weidenmueller, bass

Tomasz Stanko, trumpet; Craig Taborn, keyboard; Thomas Morgan, bass; Jim Black, drum

Here's what the critics are saying about The Jamie Baum Septet:

"Baum is that rare double-threat: a musician who can play and write equally well. Her gift for combining complexity with viscerally appealing rhythms and attractive melodies is certainly uncommon… (She) wends through the material with unerring grace, generating long flowing lines that yield nothing to her bandmates." ---JAZZIZ

"Jazz artistry at its best -- this time in the form of Jamie Baum. Baum's adventurous creations shine with polished gems…and the result is lush, distinctive, swirling musical landscapes filled with contrast and adventure." ---POST-GAZETTE

"Jamie Baum is a phenomenon. She is a master flautist, arranger, composer, synthesizer of melody, musician of freedom and branching of modern classical elements with the improvisation of jazz." --- JAZZNOW.COM
