Andalusian Music Festival - Day 1

Saturday, February 14, 2009 8:00 pm

Al-Ala from Fes, Morocco, featuring Orchestra Otmani, led by Mohammed Otmani (violin, viola, rebab, lute, goblet drum, tambourine and vocal).  This concert opens the Andalusian Music Festival in New York.

Andalusian music is the musical and poetic traditions from the Medieval southern Spain that have been preserved in Morocco by the descendants of Muslim and Jewish refugees since the Reconquista. It is performed in the form of vocal and instrumental suites ("Nawbat") based on ancient poems of love, pleasure, wine and nature.

Orchestra Otmani of Fes makes its New York debut in this concert.

The program contains excerpts from Nawbat Istihlal and Nawbat Ouchchaq (Lovers’ Suite) for a special Valentine’s Day performance. The orchestra features a number of up-and-coming conservatory-trained musicians including 21-year-old lead vocalist Marouane Hajji who began his career as a child prodigy at the age of nine.
