Cosmopolis brings together chamber works for strings, winds, piano, and baritone by four composers representing exciting trends in the diversification of classical music composition. Toru Takemitsu’s Entre-temps for oboe and string quartet, in the composer’s words, “resembles the structure of a dream.”  Mohammed Fairouz’s Furia, for baritone, string quartet and wind quintet was premiered at Merkin Concert Hall by Randall Scarlata, the Borromeo String Quartet and Imani Winds.  Ned Rorem’s The Unquestioned Answer reacts to Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question. Kaija Saariaho’s Terra Memoria was commissioned for a July, 2007 premiere by Carnegie Hall for the Emerson String Quartet.
