An integral part of Kaufman Center, the Special Music School is the first and only school of its kind in the United States: a public school with a combined academic and pre-conservatory level music curriculum beginning in kindergarten. At the Special Music School, a child with a demonstrated musical gift has the opportunity to receive the highest level of training possible to develop a musical career.

The school is a public-private partnership between Kaufman Center and the New York City Department of Education. The Center, which is dedicated to excellence in music education and performance, houses the school and funds the entire music program - the private lessons, classes and ensembles - from grants and contributions.
