Free Broadway Playhouse Tickets Available for Title 1 Schools

Friday, November 04  |  6:19am

Attention New York City educators!

Free tickets for Kaufman Center’s Broadway Playhouse series at Merkin Concert Hall are available for children at Title 1 schools. The 2012 performances for schools will take place at 10 am on three Mondays: Jan 9, Feb 5 and Mar 19.

Last season more than 800 children from seven Title 1 NYC public schools attended these school concerts, which received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students and teachers. A Curriculum Guide developed by director Sean Hartley helps teachers prepare their students for the concerts and to enhance their learning before and after. The Guide includes background material on the writers and lyrics as well as CDs of songs taught in the concerts and many activities for children that give them a deeper insight into the creative process, including writing original lyrics, designing posters and writing plays. This program is supported by the TD Charitable Foundation.

Broadway Playhouse concerts introduce children ages 4-11 to classic musicals through captivating medleys, rousing sing-alongs, lively games in which audience members participate and mini-musicals. Children also learn the stories behind the making of some of the greatest musicals of all time. This year's shows explore the musicals of George and Ira Gershwin (Porgy and Bess, Strike Up the Band), Stephen Sondheim (Into the Woods and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) and "Yip" Harburg (Finian's Rainbow and The Wizard of Oz).
